At their first encounter as classmates, Gilbert was known to tease Anne by calling her Carrots. Amybeth McNulty portrays Anne, who is 13 years old and has lived in an orphanage, as well as being the host home for strangers. Anne is accidentally sent to Prince Edward Island in late 1890s, where she lives with Matthew Cuthbert and Marilla Cuthbert. As the series ends, the year is 1919, and the characters are happy; Gilbert is 55 and remains deeply in love with Anne in Green Gables.
